In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful. This is the Book in which there is no doubt, guidance for the righteous. Those who believe in the Unseen, and perform the prayers, and donate from what We have provided for them. And those who believe in what was revealed to you, and in what was revealed before you, and are certain of the Hereafter. These are upon guidance from their Lord.

But as for those who reject faith, and die rejecting—these: upon them is the curse of سورة البقرة, and of the angels, and of all people. It is they who exchange guidance for misguidance, سورة البقرة, and forgiveness for punishment, yet they have no tolerance for the Fire.

As for those who disbelieve—it is the same for them, whether you have warned them, or have not warned them—they do not believe. Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. They will have a severe punishment.

A major theme is guidance: urging the pagans Al-Mushrikeen and the Jews of Medina to embrace Islam , and warning them and the hypocrites Munafiqun of the fate God had visited in the past on those who failed to heed his call. Al-Baqara is believed by Muslims to have been revealed in in Medina over a long period after the Hijrah , with the exception of the riba verses which Muslims believe were revealed during the Farewell Pilgrimage , the last Hajj of Muhammad. Following the muqatta'at , Al-Baqara begins with the declaration that the Quran is free of doubt and contains guidance for those who possess taqwa. There follows a description of the kafirs and munafiqs. The first of these verses uses the word kafir to describe one who conceals the truth, and Muhammad is advised that they will not believe despite his efforts because God has sealed their hearts and hearing, and covered their eyes so that they will not be able to see, hear, or comprehend guidance , and that they will be punished with a great torment. It is said that they try to deceive God and the mumins believers but they deceive themselves without perception, that in their hearts is a disease which God increases, and that they will be punished with a painful torment. To the believers they say they believe, but when they go back to their devils, they tell confess their disbelief, but they do not know that God deceives them and increases their deviation. They are then called those who engage in a profitless trade, the purchase of error with guidance. The munafiqs are then likened to a person who starts a fire and feels safe in its immediate surrounding, but God extinguishes the fire and the person is covered in darkness. The Quran then calls them deaf, dumb, and blind.

Allah is swift in reckoning. Whoever drinks from it does not belong with me. Likewise, the ignorant said the same thing. But if you trust one another, let the trustee fulfill his trust, and let him fear Allah, his Lord. The sacred month for the sacred month; and sacrilege calls for retaliation. And whoever volunteers good—Allah is Appreciative and Knowledgeable. And provide for them: the wealthy according to his means, and the poor according to his means. And when you have divorced women, and they have reached their term, either retain them amicably or release them amicably. The Hajj is during specific months. I am the Acceptor of Repentance, the Merciful. And obey Allah. We will make you a wonder for the people. Allah is Forgiving and Clement. And wherever you come from, turn your face towards the Sacred Sanctuary. Remember My blessing which I bestowed upon you, and that I favored you over all nations.

But Allah promises you forgiveness from Himself—and grace. And let there be witnesses whenever you conclude a contract, and let no harm be done to either scribe or witness. Then disperse from where the people have dispersed, and ask Allah for forgiveness. And He has knowledge of all things. Allah, there is no god except He, the Living, the Everlasting. Have you not considered the notables of the Children of Israel after Moses? And Allah is with the patient. Remember My favor which I bestowed upon you, and that I favored you over all people. Their example is similar to the example of a person who kindles a fire; but when it illuminates his surroundings, Allah takes away their light, leaving them in darkness—unable to see. To you is the destiny.
