The Trattoria i 4 Leoni is located in Piazza della Passera a square you won't find on any map since it is small and an intersection of other streets , just a few steps away from the Pitti Palace. Finding it is not easy but you won't be sorry if you make the effort. The restaurant serves good Tuscan and Florentine dishes at an affordable price considered the quality and location. Inside, the atmosphere is welcoming and cozy yet rustic. The first room is bigger and furnished in traditional wooden chairs and tables but the walls are adorned with modern contemporary artwork. The smaller inside room feels more secluded and romantic. The staff is friendly and outgoing, always ready to offer suggestions if you don't know what to order. The menu isn't very long, but it offers all the most delicious recipes of Florentine and Tuscan cuisine. For the ladies I suggest you order the Fagottini di pere e asparagi , handmade pasta with a delicate flavor filled with pears and ricotta covered in a white sauce with asparagus. For the gentlemen, I recommend the Spaghetti con trippa e finocchietto fresco , which offers a decisively more flavorable introduction to the local ingredients of Floretine tripe and fresh fennel. I always hesitate when I have to order the second dish, since there are many good selections.

I sometimes wonder if the restaurants show 4leoni for the camera and the recommender, then not so much later, 4leoni. The steak was great; and this is coming from a Texan! The waiters were impatient.

Like many restaurants that get good reviews from RS, the 4 Leonis has fallen into a complacency of becoming full of themselves, and falling short of their past accolades. Our dishes were skimpy in portion, and way overpriced for what we received. The pear raviolis had 8, yes easily countable, 8 pieces of small puffs of pasta. While tasty, it was not worth 14 euros by Italian standards and compared to other restaurants of equal, if not better quality. The shrimp scampi was shrimp skimpy and bizarre with the heads on shrimp plopped on top of pasta, hollowed out with no meat in them.

An absolutely must-try is our insalata 4 Leoni made with rucola, emmenthal cheese, avocado, and a pesto made of rucola and pine nuts. In summer you will always find prosciutto and melone, tomatoes and burrata, and fresh, young and tender spinach salad. In winter you can choose our brawn salads with orange peel or artichokes with rucola and grana cheese or our autumn salad made with red cabbage, chestnuts, squash, and gorgonzola cheese. Much of the fresh pasta we prepare is made every day in our kitchen using only old organic grains.
