However, as Gaara grew and his abilities began to manifest, Rasa realised that this had been a poor choice, and started to view Gaara as a failed experiment that threatened the inhabitants of Suna, due to Gaara's unstable nature of attacking citizens unintentionally.

Originally debuting as an antagonist, Gaara is a shinobi affiliated with Sunagakure and is the son of Sunagakure's leader, the Fourth Kazekage. He was born as a demon's host as part of his father's intention to have a weapon to restore their village. However, a combination of being ostracized by the Sunagakure villagers, his early inability to control the Tailed Beast, and the notion that his deceased mother called him her curse on the village caused Gaara to become a ruthless killer who believes his own purpose is to kill his enemies. Gaara has appeared in several pieces of Naruto media, including two of the featured films in the series, the third original video animation, and several video games. Gaara was created a foil to the series' eponymous character, Naruto Uzumaki , as the two were born through similar circumstances, but develop vastly different personalities due to a troubled upbringing. His designs and name underwent major changes in the making of his final one which also was modified in later arcs to give Gaara a design that is easier to draw. However, not all characters have an equal footing as some had to undergo much more, especially those that were cursed with the power of the tailed-beasts, more commonly known as Jinchuriki. Overwhelmed with emotions and grief, Rasa blamed his son for the death of his wife, sowing the seeds of hatred that would bloom later on. The Kazekage saw Gaara simply as a weapon for the Hidden Sand, forgoing all emotions and sentiments for the child. He even had the young boy kept in isolation, away from his siblings and other children, further deepening the hollowness in his heart. Under such immense pressure, Gaara became highly unstable and went on several tailed-beast rampages, causing more harm than good to the Hidden Sand. Seeing the damage Gaara had caused, Rasa had no other choice but to deem his son a failed experiment, as the young Jinchuriki was of no use to the village anymore. The attempt that had the most profound effect on Gaara was the one led by his uncle, Yashamaru. The Kazekage gave him one final chance to prove himself as an asset for the Hidden Sand, which was seen to be in the form of invading the Hidden Leaf Village. Although Rasa was willing to give the ultimate sacrifice by having his own son killed for the sake of the village, it's obvious that he had gravely misjudged Gaara and his power, with his own hasty decisions becoming the cause of his undoing in the end.
