Chainmail also known as chain mail or simply chain was a type of armor used on Toril. Chainmail was a common form of armor made of interlocking metal rings. Chainmail could also provide the base of other armors, such as plate mail. Chainmail could comprise an entire set of armor, or it could be a specific article, such as a chain shirt or gauntlet. Chain shirts covered only the torso, leaving the arms and legs free. Full chainmail armor covered most of the body and hung from the shoulders, making it uncomfortable to wear for a long time. Lace mail was a variant of chainmail that was "airier" and showed off the skin beneath it. Ring mail was a variant of chainmail in which large metal rings were sewn onto a backing of leather or cloth. It was harder to maintain and provided less protection than standard chainmail. Chainmail was usually made from metal. This simple mechanic is undeniably important for both player characters and monsters. In this article, we dissect the Armor Class mechanic and figure out what makes it tick. In 5th Edition, Armor Class AC is one of the most important aspects of any character because it determines how easily they can be hit. A high AC can mean that a creature is particularly dexterous or that they can use magic to defend themselves. When making a Saving Throw, Armor Class does not affect the outcome of the roll. If you have a spell, item, feat, or racial trait that affects your Armor Class then the calculation will change. Below are some examples of different ways to increase AC, these options focus mainly on the Basic Rules, though some examples are given from other sources. Armor is one of the most common ways to increase Armor Class in 5e.
