A83 currently operating under a single lane closure with temporary traffic lights controlling traffic movements through the Rest and Be Thankful from 6am to 6pm. Preparatory works to realign the southern end of the temporary diversion route at the A83 Rest and Be Thankful will start this week. Although these works will pause for Christmas they will restart in early January with completion expected in Spring

For several years now, residents and businesses across Argyll and Bute and further afield have seen one of the main roads linking Argyll to the rest of Scotland partially closed off because of landslides. The Rest and Be Thankful section of the A83 road is an iconic stretch of road, with stunning scenery around it, and a long and proud history in the surrounding area. Above all else, it is a vital section of road, linking communities across Argyll to the Central Belt of Scotland, including Kintyre, Cowal, and Mid-Argyll. There have been multiple instances of landslides blocking this section of road over many years, and despite recent investment on landslide mitigation measures, these problems persist. Blockages to the road can be devastating for the local economy and for businesses, as well as being severely disruptive for local residents given the limited travel options available as an alternative to the A It is clear that a permanent solution is required, which ensures that the A83 is fully accessible all year round, and that the uncertainty caused by landslides is avoided as best as practicably possible. The community needs to come together, as one voice, to tell the Scottish Government that decisive action is needed now. SNP ministers have been severely criticised after it was revealed that millions of pounds have been wasted on unsuccessful mitigation measures at the Rest and Be Thankful on the A83 trunk road in Argyll and Bute. In a report to go before councillors this week, Kirsty Flanagan also warned that the A83 spending proposals was likely to have a major impact on plans to upgrade the A82 between Tarbet and Inverarnan. An update on when the A83 in Argyll and Bute will fully reopen is expected on Wednesday. Road management operator Bear Scotland said about 12, tonnes of material had been removed from the road which was hit by seven landslides. Further checks will be made on Wednesday before a decision is made on when the road will be safe to open. More heavy rain hit areas of west and central Scotland on Tuesday as clear-up operations were under way. The warning came after large swathes of Scotland saw about a month's worth of rain on Saturday. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency said 15 flood warnings and nine flood alerts were still in place around the country. According to Bear Scotland, a total of seven landslides reached the A83 and a further four were captured in pits and nets along the side of the road. Only the Ardgartan to Inveraray section of the route remains closed. Bear Scotland's Ian Stewart said: "Our teams have worked at pace, whenever it was deemed safe, to clear the roads and return full access to residents of Argyll.
