Qualcomm has historically been pretty silent about its GPU architectures. You'll notice that specific details of Adreno GPU execution resources have been absent from most of our SoC comparisons. Starting with MSM however, this is starting to change. As we discussed in our Samsung Galaxy S 2 review , Qualcomm's Adreno architecture is a tile based immediate mode renderer with early-z rejection. Qualcomm is slowly detailing its new Snapdragon mobile platform at its annual Snapdragon Summit event here in Maui, Hawaii -- with more details on the GPU side of things in Adreno Qualcomm said that Adreno is the " most efficient graphics core in the world ". Qualcomm made a strong point that the new Snapdragon and Adreno powered GPU offer sustained performance, versus turning up and killing benchmarks but losing power over time as speeds drop to keep heat and power consumption down. Qualcomm doesn't just want to make a better chip, it wants to be the outright leader in its field -- it's not used to coming in second best. This means Qualcomm needs to be make the required efficiency upgrades in Snapdragon to handle that, with the company pushing that it has sustained performance -- not just brute speed, that slows down once the benchmarks are run. Gamers require constant gameplay, something Qualcomm is well aware of -- they say that Snapdragon will perform just as well in the chilly environment of Alaska as well as the sunny beaches of Maui. One Snapdragon powered phone will perform like another, versus the tweaks that phone makers will do to their respective handsets. Snapdragon powered gaming smartphones are truly going to be beasts, and for the first time ever I kinda want to get one.

New to the Adreno architecture is support for tessellation, including the necessary hull and domain shader stages, and as a Direct3D 11 product this would also include with it other Direct3D 11 features such as compute shaders and draw indirect support. Mobile developers will also be happy to hear that this is the first Qualcomm product to support adaptive scalable texture compression ASTC , the OpenGL next-generation compression technology that should further improve, unify, and simplify the use of compressed textures on mobile platforms.
