He is Kiryu 's oath brother and the patriarch of the Nishikiyama Family. His best friend, Kiryu, often calls him by the name "Nishiki". His reasoning for joining was due to feeling indebted to Shintaro Kazama and the Yakuza for paying his ill sister's medical bills. Throughout the events of Yakuza 0, Akira was heavily against Kiryu's approach against the many trials he faced. After Kiryu was framed for murder and resigned from the Dojima Family to protect Shintaro Kazama's reputation, Akira stayed within the Yakuza. Upon Kiryu joining the Dojima Family's rival, Tachibana Real Estate, Akira, along with the others within the Family, were sent under the orders of Hiroki Awano, to hunt Kiryu down and return him to the Family, so that he can be sent to "The Hole" to suffer his punishment.

Originally a member of the Dojima Family , he goes on to become the patriarch of the Nishikiyama Family. Nishikiyama has a muscular build and loose, black shoulder length hair in Yakuza 0 , as well as the prologue and flashback sequences in Yakuza Kiwami. Nishikiyama's tattoo depicts a red koi swimming upwards and was tattooed by Utabori. The koi is red with white fins and red scales with white edges. The koi is surrounded by gray waves. His tattoo represents his ambition to climb the ranks of the Tojo Clan , as in Japanese and Chinese mythology, the Koi must swim upstream the Yellow River through the dragon's gate of Longmen to turn into a dragon. In Yakuza 0 , only his tattoo's outline is finished. In Yakuza and Yakuza Kiwami , Nishikiyama wears a double-breasted white suit, black dress shirt, white patterned necktie, and black crocodile leather oxfords. In Yakuza 0 , he wears a maroon suit with a black and gold patterned dress shirt, a necklace with a silver pendant that has a diagonal checkered pattern, a dark brown leather belt with a gold buckle, and shiny dark brown cap toe oxfords. Shintaro Kazama with the young Nishikiyama and Kazuma Kiryu. Akira Nishikiyama was born in Tokyo , Japan on 8 October , and he was orphaned at a young age. At the age of 17, both Nishikiyama and Kiryu who nicknamed his friend "Nishiki" decided to join the Tojo-kai yakuza clan despite Kazama's initial steadfast opposition once even resulting in a beating. The two best friends were attached to the Kabukicho -based Dojima-gumi in , and Nishikiyama cultivated his image as a "ladies' man" in order to impress his superiors and earn their favor as he worked to advance through the ranks of the criminal underworld. During the late s, Kazama would be arrested after being betrayed by his fellow Dojima-gumi lieutenants at the behest of their boss, Sohei Dojima , who had discovered that Kazama had been secretly undermining his power due to his opposition to Dojima's cruelty. On 10 December , the day after Kiryu was implicated in the murder of Taichi Kurihara whom Kiryu had not killed , Nishikiyama brought Kiryu to the Kazama-gumi captain Osamu Kashiwagi , and Kashiwagi deduced that Kiryu had been framed for the murder, most likely by the lieutenant Daisaku Kuze , who sought to have Kazama expelled from the family so that he could take his place as captain. Framing Kiryu for a murder would reflect poorly on Kazama and provide the necessary grounds for his expulsion from the Tojo clan. Against Nishikiyama and Kashiwagi's advice, however, Kiryu decided to retire from the yakuza so that his actions in searching for the man who framed him would not reflect on Kazama.
