Ex-employees and industry experts came together to blind test a range of items including Christmas crackers and panettone to see whether or not brand is always best. Among the tests were three champagnes from Aldi, Sainsbury's and Harrods, with the group unanimously voting in favour of the bargain supermarket's own brand. Aldi is my personal choice for grocery shopping as it is objectively the best value for money without losing much of the quality. However, I've never been inclined to dip into its champagne selection - until now. Ringing in the festive season early, I popped the bottle and poured myself a glass before eventually finishing the entire bottle.

Statistics released by Retail Week this week showed that two well-known stores appealing to a very different demographic make the same amount per sq ft from their portfolio. However, the real eyebrow raiser was discount chain Aldi not only being one of the top five UK retailers, but the fact that it shared the position with exclusive Knightsbridge department store Harrods. The two retailers came in joint fifth in the data, compiled by Retail Week Prospect analyst Philip Wiggenraad. Fashion house Burberry, entertainment specialists Game and Liberty department store took second, third and fourth place respectively.
