For a boy coming of age and discovering a magical self-reliance and new powers for every occasion, the future is in the cards, in this fantasy adventure. Arthur lives with his father, a fallen but proud former noble, in Border Village 49, along with the other good folks condemned to toil in service to the Baron. But Arthur has an edge: a stolen heart card that secretly fell into his possession, thanks to a dragon. Invaluable, too, to a young man of spellcasting ambitions. Mile by dusty mile, he gains new skills and learns more about his increasing capabilities. But when he meets Horatio, his sharp-tongued new best friend and a spell card collector himself, Arthur discovers the greater powers to come by building on the Legendary card hidden close to his heart. Amidst danger, rescue, and friendships with both humans and those creatures of the more leathery variety, Arthur awakens to a newfound confidence.

While I couldn't help but shake my head at some of his decisions and actions, I also recognized that Arthur's world was pretty dog-eat-dog. Community Reviews. Honour Rae. The poetic turns of phrase were used sparingly, but that just made them really pop when they did show up. What a fantastic stroke of luck it was to pick this book up. I am interested in reading the next one because it feels like the author got better as the book went on, and there's a good setup for future books. Yes, it's not really a deckbuilding book, and the cards are just stand-ins for gems or any other typically used magic vessel, but like the athor said cards are awesome. The editing is very good for an independent author, and the stats, which are numerous, keep things interesting. William Howe. And lastly it all clashes. It was most likely because of this that the book fell a little flat for me.
