Though with a few touches that might be called a bit too arch for the proceedings, this is a swell little effort by Spanish director Antonio Trashorras. The movie is broken up, but not really, into a series of vignettes moving forward then backward in time, to fill in things we missed earlier, with a hand ringing a bell at each interruption, I suppose to indicate that this is yet another step taken by the devil; and, then, there are the strange elaborately occult titles of the vignettes, the mutilated angle, a year ago, the boiled word, Manipura, the peacock drool and the ventriloquist king, though one does not know the exact meaning of any of these, one gets it that they somehow signify that witchcraft is being advanced, so just for that they are effective. The story is of two girls, both intriguing in their own way, the studious Sandra Rocio Leon and Cris, the slutty party girl, played in a movie-stealing role by Ana de Armas, having lost a roommate, Anabel, are looking for a new roommate. In a moment of weakness, they ok an older man, Lucio, staying with them, because he gives them a good sob story, without having read between the lines, namely, that he has no income, and no way to contribute to the rent, from whence all problems come. Though Lucio butters them up early with doing all the cooking and chores, his inability to pay anything to the rent begins to bring out the problems in the friendship. The movie has a sort of recursive style, in showing us scenes of their interactions, then, later, showing us those scenes again, in terms of what happened between the lines. In maybe the best scene in the movie Sandra calls Chris off her exercise bike for them together to go confront Lucio with his problem and he fully concedes, rather shocking them, that he cannot contribute. This scene involves terrifically complicated emotional ups and downs, more so from de Armas who does the whole thing sweaty in a workout bra, she is supernaturally sexy in this scene. Only after this point do we get an inkling that Lucio is somehow part of a cult, or a witch. He has thus far only demonstrated oddness in that he has a cut on his finger that will not heal. Quite grossly, he serves soup to Chris with two drops of his blood dropped in, I suppose as a binding spell. As things progress, there are color segments, in this black and white movie, where Lucio, Sandra and Chris are shown standing opposite, merged, haunted by each other in a blackout background, to suggest the process of fusing and haunting he is undertaking. Later, they involve faces, fluxing between blue and read as if meditating with eyes closed on entoptic considerations of who one is. There are other cutaways segments of dark figures invading the apartment, and then another where hands make all sorts of merging gestures, not unlike in Suspiria. Finally, the crisis comes when Sandra not only fails her civil service exam, but loses her job, leaving Cris to pay for everything, when she, two months later, freaks, berating Sandra, Lucio reveals that in fact she is the daughter of the landlord and in reality their landlady and her cry of poverty is all a pose, as she most definitely can afford it.
