The commissioning team described Nicola Walker's detective series as "a breath of fresh air with a whip-smart detective, great cases and the glorious Scottish scenery. Nicola Walker has been integral in helping us develop her character, creating a maverick female detective who not only has Norwegian ancestry but is dryly funny, a chaotic parent and a fish out of water. For those who missed the original release, it will also be on BBC One. The first episode aired on Saturday, May 20 at pm with episodes to follow on a weekly time slot. It is also available on iPlayer. Annika follows the sharp, witty and enigmatic DI Annika Strandhed Walker , as she heads up a new specialist team — the Marine Homicide Unit MHU — that is tasked with investigating the unexplained, brutal and seemingly unfathomable murders that wash up in the waterways of Scotland.

In August , it was confirmed that a second series had been commissioned. The relationship between Annika and Morgan, her teenage daughter, is the basis for a sub-plot across all the episodes. Annika regularly breaks the fourth wall to communicate directly with the audience about aspects of the current case and personal reflections. She is of Norwegian ancestry, and often references Norwegian culture and folklore. In Series 2 after Annika revealed to the audience that Michael is Morgan's biological father she needs to tell him. But when Blair announces her pregnancy and Tyrone reveals he will be leaving Annika puts it off. After Tyrone leaves Harper becomes apart of the team. As the series progresses Annika and Michael have to work out how and when they are going to tell Morgan but after Erin dumps her they decide to wait. In the series Annika rekindles her relationship with Jake, however Annika's father arrives. She begins to build a few bridges with him because of Morgan and she asks if Michael is her dad. She is very invested in her job while trying to maintain a good relationship with her daughter Morgan. Her Norwegian ancestry and connections continue to influence her thoughts and emotions though she is now in Scotland. She and DS McAndrews were in police college at the same time but haven't seen each other for years.
