Self-taught chef James Walters has developed the business gradually over 20 years, from a stall selling Levantine snacks at markets and festivals via a regular Borough Market presence that graduated to a arabica bar & kitchen sit-down restaurant in He is looking to expand further.

For me to delay a visit to a newly opened Middle Eastern restaurant for much longer than it takes to glance over the online menu, would mean committing nothing less than sacrilege. And so — on only their second day of trade after a soft-launch period — I arrive in the heat of the evening expectant and hungry and with a Persian in tow for good measure. The Arabica brand began life on this very ground over 14 years ago, selling a modest range of home-cooked mezze wares amongst what was then just a handful of other merchants. Since then, it has expanded into trading at several London market locations, grown an impressive online offering and boasts a Selfridges concession. It has blossomed into a devilishly handsome and confident young buck that feeds people great food and flirts with wild abandon from the menu. The atmosphere is entirely at ease, whilst still sophisticated enough to impress a date or play host to a few suits.

The menu draw inspiration from adventures through the fertile valleys of Jordan, mountain villages of Lebanon and vibrant cities of Istanbul, Beirut, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Atmospheric at any time of day with the lively bustle of market life and a soundtrack to lift your spirit — Meat-eaters, pescatarians, vegetarians and vegans will all find plenty to please from the vibrant array of colourful meze and small plates, flatbreads from the clay oven and pasture-fed meat and day-boat fish from the charcoal grill. Borough Market has grown to over individual stalls. There are the traditional fruit, vegetables, bread and meat but these days the market reflects how cosmopolitan London eats. There are wine merchants, stalls selling olives, cheeses and spices. A jewel box of gastronomic delights.

In both locations it served some of the finest Lebanese cuisine in London, and continues to do so. Highlights from a long menu of well-priced, traditional mezze include hummus and moutabel aubergine dip which are exemplary in showing just how well these classics can be executed. Then there's spicy paprika-rich sujuk sausages, and foul medames broad beans that are brought to life with garlic, lemon and peppery olive oil. The team have made a buzzy home of a railway arch around the corner, serving vibrant, spice-filled dishes and similarly punchy Eastern-inspired cocktails.

This restaurant presents the dishes of the Levant but the cocktails were contemporary — although some giving a nod eastwards. The ice cream was lightly flavoured rather than giving a hit of piney resin. A pretty plateful. Food 3. Login Join. I wished I liked it more as I love lebanese food in general and know of many good ones in London. Crisp, floral and refreshing.
