Area versus perimeter
The perimeter is the length of the outline of a shape.
Area and Perimeter are two important concepts. Sometimes, the term 'Area' is confused with 'Perimeter'. They both are entirely different. The area is defined as the amount of space occupied by any two-dimensional shape. Perimeter defines the boundary or outline of a flat shape. The methods of measuring area and perimeter are completely different. Let us discuss the key differences between these two important terms.
Area versus perimeter
What is the difference between the perimeter and area of a shape? Above is the graph of a square yard. The brown border is a fence, while green square is the grass. Think of a two dimensional closed geometric shape, such as a triangle or a square. The continuous line that forms the border closing the shape is called the perimeter. The length of the perimeter of a shape can be calculated by adding up the length of each side of the shape. Notice the white space inside the perimeter of the shape. That space is called the area. The area of different shapes can be found using different formulas. When calculating the area of a shape, the units will always be squared. The area of the rectangle above is 35 units2.

In geometry, area is the 2-dimensional space or region occupied by a closed figure, while perimeter is the distance around a closed figure i. For example, the area can be used to calculate the size of the carpet to cover the whole floor of a room. Perimeter can be used to calculate the length of fence required to surround a yard or garden. Two shapes may have the same perimeter, but different areas or may have the same area, but different perimeters. Area is a quantity that expresses the extent of a two-dimensional region or shape in the plane. To understand area, think of how much material would be necessary to make the shape, or how much paint would be needed to cover the surface. Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape.

We use the terms area and perimeter quite often in the classroom. We also know that area and perimeter are characteristi cs related to geometrical shapes.
There is no direct relation between area and perimeter. Post My Comment. Two shapes with the same areas can have a different value for the perimeter. The length of the perimeter of a shape can be calculated by adding up the length of each side of the shape. Victoria Rodriguez. Terms of use Privacy policy. Area The perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape. The geometric representation of figures is done by sketching the distances and areas for clear understanding. The perimeter is the measure of the boundary of a shape. For example, if the dimensions are in inches, then the perimeter is expressed as inches.
