Rockstar's Red Dead Redemption 2 will likely go down in history as one of the best games that the developer has ever produced, and much of this comes down to the strengths of the main character, Arthur Morgan. Although the world of RDR2 is filled with despicable individuals and morally questionable behavior, Arthur manages to garner sympathy and intrigue throughout the experience - a fact that still rings true five years after the game's release. Following 's Red Dead Redemption , Red Dead Redemption 2 had some big shoes to fill when it came to the main character. John Marston, the hero of the first game, is often ranked among one of the best gaming characters of all time, and there were some fans who were disappointed to learn that he wouldn't be the main character in the prequel game. Instead, RDR2 gave players control of Arthur, a character who isn't even referenced in the first game. However, Arthur's emotional story in RDR2 ultimately won over both fans of the game and newcomers, earning him a spot among the greatest gaming heroes ever. Arthur's rugged charisma is apparent from the very beginning of Red Dead Redemption 2. Dutch's gang is facing a number of threats at the start of the game, as they are on the run from the law following a botched heist in Blackwater, and wind up stuck in a snowstorm in the mountains. Despite these odds, Arthur doesn't shy away from helping out his comrades, riding ahead to scout out the road, searching for supplies, hunting, and risking his own life to rescue John Marston. He is incredibly loyal to Dutch but isn't afraid to speak his mind, which keeps him from seeming like a doormat. The way Arthur follows the Van Der Linde code while still being a strong-willed and capable character makes him likable from the start of the game, which is important given what players quickly come to learn about him. Arthur is far from a typical, morally upright hero, and he can be seen committing a number of cold and unfair acts throughout the game, including murder, extortion, and assault. While many of his actions are indefensible, it's clear that he commits these actions out of duty and loyalty to his loved ones. It's important to note that Arthur doesn't seem to particularly enjoy violence - he simply shuts off his empathic side to accomplish his goals. This moral ambiguity makes Arthur far more interesting than a typically ethical character.

Arthur Morgan is a character and the main playable protagonist of the video game Red Dead Redemption 2. A high-ranking member of the Van der Linde gang, Arthur must deal with the decline of the Wild West while attempting to survive against government forces and other adversaries in a fictionalized representation of the American frontier. He is portrayed by Roger Clark through performance capture. Rockstar Games decided to focus Red Dead Redemption 2 on one character, in order to follow him more personally. They felt that this was more appropriate for the narrative structure of a Western. Clark wanted to play Arthur in a manner that was complex enough for the player to choose his path and still make sense. Arthur has received acclaim from critics, with his complexity and path to redemption most frequently the subject of praise.
None is more fitting for Arthur than viewing his journey through the lens of the five stages of grief. After all, being holed up in sub-zero conditions in a mountain town, with no food, and two gang members killed in the ensuing chaos, things are looking ropey for the band of outlaws. His blind loyalty to Dutch pulls the veil over his eyes, and prevents him from noticing the obvious warning signs even at this early stage of proceedings. His denial, coupled with his fury, continue to serve as distractions from the glaring problems that he and the gang face. No amount of bargaining can save Arthur and company from yet another failed robbery — this time in Saint Denis — or the devastating events that maroon half of the gang off the coast of Cuba. With no money, weapons, or apparent means of rescue, doubt and despair plague Arthur. A sudden tuberculosis diagnosis, after he collapses following a violent coughing fit, leaves Arthur questioning every aspect of his life. His acknowledgement of the man he has been, and the good he can do as his death draws near, shows how Arthur has grown throughout Red Dead 2. One final ride, atop his trusty steed and with the encouraging memories of those he has helped along the way, forms a fitting send off for Arthur ahead of a dramatic finale that fails to leave a dry eye in the house. The emotional, physical, and psychological pain he endures throughout Red Dead 2 is proof of that.
