Debuting in November , the Assassin's Creed franchise is approaching its 16th birthday, and what a journey those 16 years have been. Originally conceived as a Prince of Persia spinoff , Assassin's Creed quickly took on a life of its own. Over the last decade and a half, it's become one of the most popular franchises in all of gaming, offering a great blend of action-adventure, stealth, and RPG gameplay all wrapped up in a fascinating historical package. While Assassin's Creed Mirage looks to be a smaller entry in the long-running franchise, it's still turning plenty of heads. Announced back in September of last year following some leaks, Assassin's Creed Mirage is said to be a smaller-scale adventure set in 9th-century Baghdad, following Basim Ibn Ishaq, a character first introduced in Assassin's Creed Valhalla. Though Assassin's Creed Mirage is designed to be the next main entry in the franchise, it's not really pushing the series forward in terms of mechanics or setting, and instead is acting like a return to basics, which many fans seem incredibly excited for. If a return to basics is what fans are asking for, then a remake of the first Assassin's Creed seems like a no-brainer. After 's Assassin's Creed was a massive hit, Ubisoft doubled down on the stealth-action gameplay for Assassin's Creed 2 , and that formula received even further refinement with Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Then, for the next five years and six mainline entries, Assassin's Creed 's gameplay formula stayed largely the same. By the time Assassin's Creed Syndicate rolled around in , many fans had grown tired of that formula, and seeing the numbers dip pretty significantly, Ubisoft took the franchise back to the drawing board for a few years. While a big portion of the fan base wasn't too happy with the big changes, for a general market it seemed to do the job, with Assassin's Creed Origins managing to breathe new life into the franchise , and create a formula that's been used ever since. But as time's gone on, that new formula has itself become stale, and fans are looking for another shake-up.

While I'm more than happy to see a new game rather than another remake, it's a curious decision, given the rumours of an Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake.

It's been 15 years since the Assassin's Creed franchise first leaped onto the scene, and it's somehow simultaneously changed a lot, and not at all. While the setting changes with each new entry, and the franchise saw a big shift in with the RPG-focused entries, every Assassin's Creed game still carries with it the same DNA that's been present since day one, and that's never been more true than with the most recent entry, Assassin's Creed Mirage. From the get-go, Assassin's Creed Mirage has been marketed as a smaller-scale entry in the series, designed specifically to be a throwback to the original Assassin's Creed formula. From stealth to parkour to combat to map design, almost every element of Assassin's Creed Mirage has been paired back to give fans that old-school feeling, and in the process of achieving that, Ubisoft may have inadvertently paved the way for an Assassin's Creed 1 remake. The main focus of Assassin's Creed Mirage from the very beginning was to deliver fans a classic Assassin's Creed experience that hearkened back to the series' original formula, and more specifically, the very first game in the series. Though the recent Assassin's Creed RPGs have been well-received by most fans and critics, a lot of long-time fans were desperate for a smaller-scale adventure to balance things out, and that's exactly what Assassin's Creed Mirage does.

Among Assassin's Creed games, the first one is perhaps one of the most overlooked, despite being the origin of the series and arguably the most thematically coherent. There is some explanation behind this - the product shipped nearly 14 years ago, and most gamers typically consider later sequels like Assassin's Creed II or Assassin's Creed Syndicate to be superior. The original deserves a remaster, though, for a variety of reasons. While that was a real Muslim sect blamed for the deaths of numerous Arab and Christian leaders during the era of the Crusades, in the game's fiction, they're mostly concerned with a Knights Templar conspiracy involving objects called the Pieces of Eden. Perhaps the best reason for revisiting the game is that, unlike many entries such as Assassin's Creed Odyssey , the first Assassin's Creed actually focuses on stealth and assassination. Open combat is usually a last resort - the emphasis is on using parkour or "social stealth," like blending into a crowd, to approach a target undetected. While this didn't always work as designed, it was immensely satisfying when it did. The Assassin's Creed series has gradually veered more toward mass violence and instant gratification, which certainly have their merits, but returning to stealth would provide a nice breather from the series' current format. With modern graphics and some gameplay tweaks, Assassin's Creed could easily be transformed into one of the best games in the series. It would mostly be a matter of improving AI to be both fairer and sharper, as well as balancing some mission content: Tailing and eavesdropping, for example, can sometimes be Assassin's Creed 's least entertaining or forgiving activities.

It would still require a decent amount of effort to put it all together, but an Assassin's Creed remake already has all of its pieces just waiting to be joined. Alas, that choice is not ours to make. Stealth, combat, and parkour would all need to be remade from the ground up to feel like a modern game, albeit one that still felt close enough to the original experience.
