The constant temperature inversion caused by the cool north-flowing Humboldt Ocean current and the strong Pacific anticyclone contribute to the extreme aridity of the desert. However, other sources consider that the part of the desert in Peru is a different ecosystem, and should properly be named as Pampas de la Joya desert.

Even this I have trouble judging as long as the animals are properly cared for. Both lakes are blue, amazingly deep blue. Is San Pedro de Atacama worth visiting? After leaving San Pedro Domingo Atienze and Caracoles and a minute journey to the observatory, six kilometers four miles south of town along Ruta 23, the tour starts beneath the stars with an informative and entertaining overview, including beliefs of our ancestors and how stars got their names. San Pedro de Atacama in Chile left me speechless. When we finished visiting the lakes it was already lunchtime. Again, I would strongly recommend you download maps. So stunning! Out within five minutes, running freezing back to the change room and drying and dressing at lightening speed. The chaskis, the inca messengers, used to run all the way. But one of the most remarkable features is seeing how neat rows of vines grow out of parched sand — all against the backdrop of the arid Salar de Atacama. I was there for three months and put on weight, haha! You can organise for them to pick you up from your hostel if you have a flight back from Calama. While there are plenty of tour groups catching the very same view at the very same time, it was still my favorite place to see the sun go down — and a pisco sour which is normally included in the tour only added to the enjoyment! I envy you. San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Explorations SPACE are regarded as the best in San Pedro de Atacama as they have 15 telescopes on-site, including a centimeter telescope, the largest public telescope on the continent.
