The long-awaited, two-part return of Atlanta kicks off with a Milly Rock gone wrong. He hits various viral dance-rap moves on top of his desk and up the aisles, while the other kids clap and chant along. His white-savior guidance counselor witnesses this, calls child services, and Laquarius is soon living with a couple of white lesbian hippies who already have three nearly catatonic Black foster kids, a situation with real-life roots. In previous seasons, this theme has veered toward self-criticism, like when Earn thought it would be worth it for his rising rapper friend Paper Boi Brian Tyree Henry to work with Black Justin Bieber —a character and concept that interrogates whether the unruly pop star would be treated the same if he were Black. In one of the best scenes, the white couple make Laquarius do yard work in what looks like a mini crop field. This time horror and hip-hop are blended to get at another issue the show has skewered in the past: blackface. Paper Boi and Earn are in the Netherlands during the Christmastime celebration of Sinterklaas , when people wear blackface, curly wigs, and thick red lips to play a minstrel-like character named Zwarte Piet Black Pete.

By Alan Sepinwall. After a four-year wait that felt even longer, Atlanta is finally back. A perverse part of me wishes FX had not opted to debut two episodes tonight — that after this epic hiatus, Atlanta fans would have been greeted with a Season Three premiere completely devoid of Paper Boi, Darius, and anything we have come to expect from this show, even after so much time away. Instead, FX opted to go with a double feature that serves as a perfect thematic and stylistic pairing. For that matter, they are demonstrations of how far the series can literally go, with the more traditional episode if such a thing can ever be said of Atlanta taking place 4,plus miles from the titular city. The episodes are connected by more than Earn waking up at the end of the first and the start of the second. The season opens with those two fishermen, who are given interesting character names. This Earnest opines on how whiteness is social rather than scientific, and that anyone in America can become white under the right circumstances — or be cast out of whiteness under the wrong ones. Then the Earnest we know concludes the episode waking up from what seems to have been the nightmare we just watched. Probably not. But whether Earn is literally waking up from two nightmares, one of which cast him as a white fisherman talking his buddy into his doom, the glimpses are very much linked, even as they are night and day from one another: two workaday guys in a modest boat in the dark, and a hip-hop manager in a blindingly bright hotel room next to the woman he recently had sex with.

As the messages flood in, a symphony of alerts and notification sounds swell. A text from Van asking to be picked up from Schiphol airport lights up his phone once more. As he looks at the screen, Earn is set into a frenzy as he scours the room for his clothes. She shakes her head. Silence is an answer.
However, as the episode ends and Van decides to return to Atlanta with a renewed sense of her responsibilities, viewers are left in the dark about the fates of Alfred, Darius, and Earn, who are precariously absent from the episode. However, the ambiguous scene sets up another trippy round of adventures for Earn. Naturally, viewers must be curious for answers about this cryptic scene. However, after the credits roll, there is a bonus scene that opens inside a luggage carrier. Earn arrives in the lobby to receive the package.
