N o one goes to a Wes Anderson movie expecting heartfelt melodrama or realistic human emotions and interactions. At best, these range from the piercingly acute family portraits of The Royal Tenenbaums to the bittersweet comedy capers of The Grand Budapest Hotel and the delightfully off-the-wall stop-motion animation of Isle of Dogs Fans will doubtless be dazzled by its meticulous imitation-of-life-in-miniature visual aesthetic, yet I swithered between whimsical amusement, mild curiosity and outright irritation. Cut to the widescreen, ochre-burned hues of the drama-within-the-drama; a Pirandellian fantasy in which colourful characters who occasionally break character to discuss motivation converge in a desert settlement comprising a cafe, a gas station, a motel, an observatory and a meteor crater. Everything looks like a set, through which Scalextric-style cops-and-robbers chase at regular intervals. Hasten the day. Augie is a pipe-smoking war photographer whose eye is caught by Midge Campbell Scarlett Johansson. Deliberately, presumably. For some viewers of Asteroid City, I doubt that will be much of a problem. Asteroid City or "Asteroid City" is a American comedy-drama film written, directed, and produced by Wes Anderson , from a story he wrote with Roman Coppola. Its plot is mostly concerned with a play of the events of a Junior Stargazer convention in a retrofuturistic version of , but it becomes metatextual because the making of the play is the subject of a television documentary. The project was announced in September as an untitled romance film , with Anderson writing, producing and directing, alongside Jeremy Dawson of American Empirical Pictures and Steven Rales of Indian Paintbrush. In February , it was described as being about a "group of brainy teenagers". Several sets resembling a desert landscape and a mock train station were used. Post-production included editor Barney Pilling and a musical score composed by frequent Anderson composer Alexandre Desplat , featuring country and western songs from many artists.

While the world goes bananas for the retro Americana of Barbenheimer — the beauty and the beast currently burning up the box office — leave it to Wes Anderson to quietly deliver his own dizzy diorama of pastels and cotton candy mushroom clouds, an irresistible synthesis of Looney Tunes, Spielberg and Atomic Age paranoia that pays tender tribute to the power of art and the imagination. In a career that now spans nearly 30 years, Anderson's latest film, Asteroid City — a carousel of astronomers, aliens and singing cowboys; of mid-century madness, deadpan soul and signature melancholy — might just be one of his finest. Like so much of the filmmaker's recent work , it's both a fable and a kind of parallel reality, a story nested within another that has the contours of a familiar dream. It's , and somewhere on the edge of the desert in the American Southwest, between kitsch postcard and John Ford vista, sits the eponymous town, a sun-bleached wasteland whose lone "point of interest" — not counting a comically unfinished ramp to nowhere — is a crater said to have been formed when a meteorite hit the earth thousands of years ago. Atomic bomb tests rattle the windows of the local diner, while a roadrunner bird — complete with a droll "meep meep" — scampers across the landscape. On the eve of Asteroid City's annual Junior Stargazers and Space Cadets convention, an unlikely cross-section of the American populace — played by a sizeable chunk of Hollywood's acting A-List — descends upon the town. There's a recently widowed war photographer, Augie Steenbeck Jason Schwartzman , and his kids, who number one brainiac teenage son Jake Ryan and three little girls cosmically named Andromeda, Cassiopeia and Pandora , who arrive with a tupperware container full of their mum's ashes on its way to Grandpa a silvery Tom Hanks. They've all set up at a motel — run by Steve Carrell's officious, visor-clad oddball — whose vending machines variously dispense soda pop, martinis, and barren plots of real estate. The occasion also brings scientists, including a loopy astronomer played by who else Tilda Swinton, and the US military, with Jeffrey Wright's five-star general capturing the heady, turbulent spirit of the Atomic Age.

Additionally, its emotional impact is substantial. Imagine a gorgeous butterfly landing on your heart and then squeezing on that heart with sharp pincers you never knew it had. He has written, we learn, a hit play, more than one, in fact. This film opens in lustrous black-and-white and square Academy ratio, taking the form of a TV documentary, circa , in the United States of America. If this sounds hard to follow—already! None of the details, from the copy on the diner front to the displays of the vending machines, are extraneous. The Space Camp this small not-quite-town is hosting is a gathering of several scholastically gifted teens whose futuristic inventions—one of them literally a disintegration ray—are going to be stolen by the U. The brilliant kids all bring their own drama.
