Following the lives of confident aspiring musician Austin, quiet talented songwriter Ally, and their two friends.

Set in Miami, Florida , the series focuses on the relationship between two very different musicians: extroverted and fun-loving singer and instrumentalist Austin Moon and introverted and awkward songwriter Ally Dawson, who is also a singer, but has a bad case of stage fright. Ally Dawson, a shy songwriter, works at Sonic Boom , a music store owned by her father, Lester, located at the Mall of Miami. Austin Moon, an aspiring singer, interrupts Ally while she is in her practice room, singing a rough cut of "Double Take". Unbeknownst to Ally, Austin and his best friend, Dez, accidentally use the song thinking Austin wrote it himself, create a video, and post it on the Internet, after which Austin becomes an Internet sensation. After performing the song on "The Helen Show", Helen suggests that Austin return and perform another original song. Austin isn't good at songwriting, and the only solution he can think of is to plead with Ally to write another song for him. Ally initially denies in anger, but later agrees to help him.

Austin, an extroverted singer and Ally, a brilliant but shy songwriter become a team. In an effort to hurry and get Austin another hit single, Ally quickly scribbles down the lyrics to a new song. Dez misreads the words and gets a kangaroo for Austin's next video. After Austin and Dez look in Ally's personal, off-limits songbook without her permission, Austin misinterprets her most recent song lyrics and thinks she has a crush on him. Ally is excited to share her newest song with the gang, convinced that it's the greatest thing she's ever written. Unfortunately, Austin doesn't share her enthusiasm, and questions her ability to write in his voice. When embarrassing footage of Austin starts showing up on a blog, everyone is concerned how it is going to affect Austin's image. After the footage causes Austin to lose a gig, the gang becomes determined to find the anonymous culprit behind the blog. Unfortunately, Austin is only allowed to bring one guest. When Trish convinces Ally to tell the world she wrote the song, Austin pleads with her to write another hit for him. Instead, the two combine their talents to create a true musical tour-de-force. Ross Lynch portrays Austin Moon , whom is a teenager that is propelled to stardom after he becomes an overnight internet sensation with the song " Double Take ", which he "stole" from Ally, something that made her very angry at Austin, but after all, she forgave him, and they became good friends and partners. Laura Marano portrays Ally Dawson , whom is the brilliant and talented teenager whom is restricted to only writing songs because of her paralyzing stage fright.
