The round fifty cent coin was the highest-denomination and largest diameter coin of the Australian decimal coins, introduced in It has a nominal value of half an Australian dollar, the equivalent of five shillings in pre-decimal currency. Due to the large number minted in , and the rising cost of silver, it was not made in any other year. It was replaced by a twelve-sided 50 cent coin in , which retained its reverse of the Australian Coat of Arms. A total of Round 50c coins are still legal tender, but they are rarely used as means of payment.

The twelve-sided Australian fifty-cent coin is the third-highest denomination coin of the Australian dollar and the largest in terms of size in circulation. It was introduced in [3] to replace the round fifty-cent coin issued in It is by diameter the largest Australian coin currently issued and second largest after the Crown of — It is also the heaviest Australian coin in common circulation. Many commemorative designs have been issued, the large size allowing for detailed content. With a diameter of As with all coins of Australia, the reigning monarch features on the obverse. Only Elizabeth II has been featured on the coin so far. Unlike other decimal denominations, five different portraits of the queen have been used on cent coins. A unique effigy by Vladimir Gottwald was used for the royal visit commemorative fifty-cent piece. The other four portraits have featured on all then-current denominations: from to one by Arnold Machin , [8] from to one by Raphael Maklouf , [9] from to a portrait by Ian Rank-Broadley , [10] and since a portrait by Jody Clark. These portraits were introduced to British coins in , , and , respectively. The Australian fifty-cent coin was the first to display a variation of the reverse design in for the commemorating the bicentennial of Lieutenant James Cook 's landing in Australia.
