Specially selected fruit sourced from our own vineyard as well as two neighbors serve as the backbone for Avery's Blend. If you're looking for a smoother, full bodied white wine lacking the nutty, oaky, buttery characteristics of many Chardonnays then this is the pairing for you. Avery's Blend is named after the eldest of our children. This harmonious wine combines the refreshing pear, apple and crisp lemon-lime flavors of Pinot Gris and Riesling with intense honeydew, mineral and grapefruit flavored Pinot Blanc. To finish of this Chablis style blend we add Viognier, a full-bodied, intensely aromatic grape loaded with exotic floral fragrances and flavors of delicious stone fruits.

John Avery, who had died aged 70, played a key role in introducing New World wines to British drinkers. Francis John Avery was born on December 27th in Bristol where his father Ronald ran the family vintners. At prep school John soon started to reveal his interest in wine, regularly returning there with a cigar box full of tiny tasting bottles for his friends to sniff. He was also cellarer to the Junior Common Room. The lasting effect on John Avery was that he made friends with two influential figures — the wine academic Professor Maynard Amerine head of the wine faculty at University of California Davis — who taught him much about clones and varietals, and the winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff. With their help, Avery would go on to discover that producers such as Beaulieu vineyards BV were making wines of a very decent quality, albeit in small quantities. By that time he was already a well-established expert on Australian wines. He had made his first trip to the Antipodes in , the year after his American excursion. On arrival at the airport in Sydney, he was greeted by a couple of journalists excited by the opportunity of getting international approval for Australian wines. A decade later, he made his first trip to New Zealand and became the first to champion and import wines from there. Over the years he continued to travel. He thrived on making new discoveries, and his talents as a judge made him a feature on the panels of wine competitions from Hong Kong to Tasmania. He even judged English wines on these shores.

So, this one wee alcohol aphorist decided to go outside his personal safe spot and, when invited by a friend, went along to a wine tasting in Bristol. Now beer and whisky are still my drinks of choice, but I thought some of you may be amused by my initial blunderings through attempting to do notes on wine.

Averys was established more than years ago, and have been leaders in importing wines into the UK. They were the first merchant to import Chateau Petrus, they have trained legendary winemakers such as Wolf Blass and they were even the first to import New Zealand Wines into the UK before Sauvignon Blanc was even planted. This long winemaking history and expertise , makes them a wonderful merchant to partner with and that's why we are absolutely thrilled to be working with them.
