The series first aired on PBS on April 6, , and features Barney, a purple anthropomorphic Tyrannosaurus rex who conveys educational messages through songs and small dance routines with a friendly, huggable and optimistic attitude. Reruns aired on Sprout from to , and from December 17, to January 25, on Sprout's successor network, Universal Kids. On October 6, , the series was initially renewed for revival with a new season to premiere in , but that season was cancelled. The first three videos starred actress Sandy Duncan. One day in , the daughter of Connecticut Public Television executive Larry Rifkin rented one of the videos and was "mesmerized" by it. Rifkin thought the concept could be developed for PBS.

Min becomes the "Queen of Make Believe" and Barney shows the kids different ways to use their imaginations. Kathy is sad because her family is too small. Barney and the kids explore what make families wonderful. When a new girl named Tosha comes to school, Barney and the others learn about friendship. Derek and Michael disagree about who gets to keep a picture of Barney they made together, however. Baby Bop celebrates her third birthday and Barney throws a birthday party for her with things that do with the number 3. When Kathy and the others bring teddy bears to school, Barney and the kids have fun with some of their favorite things. Julie's aunt Molly visits the classroom.
