When we first bought our house, one of the things that I knew we needed to update right away was our downstairs guest bathroom. Since this is the only bathroom on the main floor and the one my guests would most likely use, I knew it needed an upgrade ASAP. Not only is the bathroom extremely small but who really wants their guests, to see ugly plumbing as soon as they enter? I thought it would just be a matter of picking a smaller profile pedestal sink at the hardware store. Unfortunately, since I have plumbing attachments coming from two different walls, to hide the plumbing I needed to find a very specific corner mounted sink with cabinets or hire a plumber to reroute the pipes.

This old house , while quirky and full of charm, is not without its challenges. Case in point: the wall-mounted porcelain sink in our upstairs bathroom. Love the high-back splash guard; hate the exposed plumbing. Right away, I imagined a fabric sink skirt with a large box pleat, trimmed in grosgrain ribbon. You see them all the time in magazines. And that's without the fabric! Enter: Designer DIY. A couple of months back, while shopping the Dollar Tree for a Dorothy Draper-inspired table setting , I came across a bunch of plain, white flour sack cloths. They're simple, beautiful and, best of all, washable! For the table, I trimmed them in green grosgrain ribbon, then used them as napkins. But as luck would have it, they would also be the perfect length for a skirted sink, made from Dollar Tree towels!

Bathroom sink skirt

If there's one idea I didn't think I'd be writing about for Livingetc , it's the sink skirt. Lining a bathroom or kitchen sink with a bustle of fabric has never really appealed to my modern design sensibilities before, but it's an idea I've started to see emerging in more contemporary spaces as I scroll Instagram and portfolios of interior designers. If you watched the home tour of Stranger Things star David Harbour and singer Lily Allen, you'll also have seen their incredible curtain-lined kitchen island created by Plain English for their eccentric New York home, beautifully designed by interior designer Billy Cotton.

The only difference is mine cost about 15 bucks! Do we get to see more of this bathroom soon? This does require a little bit more sewing but should be pretty easy to do. I enjoy it.
