Bird de la Coeur Architects is a boutique firm based in South Melbourne and specialising in multi-residential buildings — ranging from high-end apartments for the private sector to social housing for government organisations and high-end aged care housing — and one-off houses. Founded in by Neil de la Coeur and Vanessa Bird, Bird de la Coeur has grown from a three-person operation to a practice with a portfolio of completed multi-storey buildings across Australia. However, our studio-based practice has remained the same. The compelling idea for each project stems from our conversations with clients. Bird de la coeur

The McBride House is sited around two major trees, one of which is a striking park-scale blue gum. This tree forms a fulcrum around which the house is organised. Solar orientation and the existing trees gave rise to a flipped site layout. Along with the pool, the studio creates an entry journey. Access to the front door is via an enclosed path formed by the studio, past the pool and out onto a deck where the full view of the blue gum and the main house is revealed at the back of the site. Passive heating and cooling design strategies are assisted by a large array of solar panels. The project was awarded a Timber Design Award in The prominent use of timber at McBride House resonates with the surrounding natural landscape.
