It was a fortuitous statement long forgotten, but in Dawson jumped at the chance to become co-owner of Books on Beechwood when the New Edinburgh neighbourhood fixture threatened to close its doors. Its windows overlook a bustling street and sidewalk, nearby coffee shops, grocery stores and three retirement homes. Inside, about 7, books line the walls and racks. There are greeting cards, calendars, magazines and games to mix it up, but for the most part the owners have stayed away from the catch-all kitsch approach of department-style bookstores.
