I am writing about Brazilian lesbian fashion, history and symbols today because it is an integral part of a broader history of lesbian fashion as well as a unique expression of it. I must be clear, however, that I am not Brazilian and I have never been to Brazil. My research is not first hand, and this article would not have been possible without the contributions of those who reached out to me to talk about their own experiences as lesbians or queer women in Brazil, and the fashions that shape their communities.
