Reply Chat Boards. Theatre Board is currently the only chat board I use to discuss theatre, and I'm pretty happy and satisfied with that as it's completely brilliant. This means that, obviously, I'm not a member of the BroadwayWorld chat board - and I know many on this board are. I'm not sure whether people have heard about this, but actress Patti Murin who was due to be in Broadway musical 'Nerds' that was pulled at the last minute as financing fell through has "taken on the chat boards" - specifically BroadwayWorld - campaigning against the negativity and snarky comments on there. Her blog post is a pretty interesting read, as are some of the comments left below it, and I'd be interested to know what people's thoughts on it are, as this board can get heated but it's still a lovely place to be and, as I said, I'm not a member of the BroadwayWorld chat board, but I sometimes feel that the same can't be said over there. I'm afraid I have no idea who Patti Murin is, but this blog post makes her sound terribly unprofessional. Cardinal Pirelli Member.

The simple thought of the theatre chat boards like BroadwayWorld or TheatreBoard is enough to send writers, directors, performers and producers running screaming into the night. If producers had magic powers, they would make these boards vanish, but why, why do they have such a bad rap? I have been a member of the Broadway World chat board for well over a decade, I have seen everything you can see from smartly written reviews, bitching and fighting, gossiping and paid shills more on that later. Over the years my mind has flipped back and forth on the idea of these message boards, are they simply a way for theatre fans to express and share opinions, or do they do more harm to the industry than good? Here is the thing though, with all the drama that can happen on these boards, they also contain members who I think offer a valuable contribution to the art form, ones who give smart critiques of shows, often far better reviews than the critics themselves. Oh, and that message board member who thought my play sucked, well he was right, it did. These outlets allow theatre fans to connect from around the world, share casting gossip, backstage stories, news from workshops of upcoming shows and more, it can be a fun place for a theatre nerd like myself. However, one of the things the message boards are most notorious for are reviews from the paying public, starting straight away with the first preview performance, and the industry HATES these. However, that does not and should not apply to message boards where members will review the show from the first preview onwards. You see, many years ago, when a new show was in previews the tickets used to be discounted, after all, you are not seeing the final locked show, you are seeing something that is still in a state of flux, you are essentially a test audience, and producers would be far clearer in their marketing when a show was in previews. Producers and creatives might hate that their work gets judged early, but this is a reality that the theatre industry not only needs to accept but embrace. However, multiple members of these boards do in-depth smart reviews that allow others to decide if they want to spend their hard earned cash on tickets. And here is an important thing, something I wish more creatives would pay attention to though I do know that a few secretly do. The people who see every new show and review it on these message boards are incredibly knowledgeable. Frequently these posters will suggest cuts, changes, things that can make it better, the whole message board is normally in agreement, so maybe creatives and producers should spend more time listening to what they are saying rather than arguing that they are saying it?
Thank you for pointing this out! Thank you for writing this post. You are very articulate and intelligent, which I admire.
I like Patti Murin. I think I've written on this very site about at least one of her performances. And I am not the biggest fan of the theater message boards. So I by no means intend to put down one and exalt the other. In fact, I agree with the majority of what Ms.

Replies: 2 Views: But some of the posters on the board appear to want shows to bad and fail and seems to take joy in tearing them down and apart. So because people are legally allowed to say shitty things about anyone and anything they want, you want to be an asshole too? Like Liked by 1 person. Michael R. It's certainly possible. No one can love every show but personal attacks or dissing something unseen are disgusting. These next few are some of my favorites! This is what we do and we love it. This one popped up in a thread about the first preview being delayed by one day: Wow, this news should be shocking to no one. The truth is -- I think many hate the occasionally nasty tone of some message boards, while welcoming the community they build. Hi, I completely respect your right to an opinion and I know this was a devastating blow. But they should be their own entity entirely, because much of the time, they are not in the spirit of creating, and cultivating art, and supporting people who are taking real risks to do what they love. Ironically, ClydeBarrow lists me as one of his favorite performers.
