He is a captain of the Sixth Division for Gotei 13 and Rukia's brother. His vice-captain is Renji Abarai.

Rukia was introduced as Ichigo's reverse-isekai Soul Reaper friend, while Captain Byakuya Kuchiki was introduced as a law-abiding antagonist whom Ichigo needed to defeat at all costs. Over time, Ichigo and Bleach fans learned much more about Byakuya Kuchiki and what makes him such a great character after all. Byakuya redeemed himself and became a supportive brother and hero after all, making him a real standout in Bleach.
