The symbiote known as Carnage is the spawn of the Venom symbiote and is most often bonded to the sociopathic serial-killer Cletus Kasady, carnage symbiote.

One of the things that makes Carnage so dangerous seems to be the symbiote's ability to take over a host completely. Some people have managed to resist the Venom symbiote in the past, but the Carnage symbiote has a history of completely subsuming whoever it attaches to. This trait reached a new deadly level when Carnage created his very own Helhound. After Cletus Kasady abandoned the Carnage symbiote, the dangerous alien life-form went on a spiritual journey, of sorts, seeking to try and become a god. Part of this plan involved traveling to Svartalfheim and taking over one of the pups of Nyaz, the wolf goddess. As the issue made clear, the Carnage symbiote's demonstrated ability to completely take over a host makes no exception for divine beings. With the wolf pup completely under its control, Carnage created its very own Helhound, Spike, thus birthing one of the Marvel Universe's newest, most dangerous symbiotes.

While he has used his symbiote to take over other heroes and even entire towns, Carnage has only bonded with a select few. Some characters like Ben Reilly were able to contain the murderous impulses of the Carnage symbiote, while others like Cletus Kasady allowed the symbiote to run wild. He also recruited Dr. Karl Malus alongside Klaw to complete the team. Malus was forcibly bonded with the Carnage symbiote which was mentally controlled by a device created by The Wizard to create one of the worst versions of Carnage. The device ultimately failed at controlling the symbiote and Carnage broke free. Carla Unger was working with a sample when she received an angering call from her husband. The symbiote sensed her raw emotion and entered her body. When she returned home, the Carnage splinter began to influence her as her anger returned. This has also resulted in the existence of several duplicates of the Carnage symbiote, some of which have been taken into the custody of the US military or corporations like Alchemax. Cletus has also been bonded to other symbiotes -- one which he found in the Negative Zone , and which was evidently assimilated by the remnants of the original Carnage symbiote in his body to rejuvenate it; and one which was forcibly bonded to him by the Poisons and then consumed to give rise to Poison Carnage , ultimately perishing in orbit after the death of the Poison Queen.
