They settled in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, raising their families and contributing to the growth of the city they now called home. This series, Growing Up Brooklyn features photos, carson gamefarm, stories, traditions, and memories of living in Brooklyn.
Gigi Elmes on Flickr has posted this picture of an uncovered billboard in upstate New York. It probably was some kind of schlocky Old West town where you overpaid to watch a gunfight and drink sarsaparilla in the saloon. The Catskills were full of these places, as evidenced by this article in the New York Times. Carson City undoubtedly is closed now, since I can find very little about it on the web. But I did find this postcard of the place, presumably in its prime.

When you whipped out a bottle to feed the animals in the petting zoo, you were basically mauled by goats. A package of crackers might attract a hungry mob of deer, roaming free with dangerous-looking antlers. A pillory invited parents to imprison their children for a photo opp see my cousin Rory in the photo above. Good times all around! The Catskill Game Farm , which opened in and closed in , was the largest privately owned zoo in the United States, and I visited every summer of my childhood. Here's my dad rocking some early's short-shorts, while pushing my stroller. I asked him if they were so tight that the white liners of the pockets were popping out, and he looked at me like I was crazy and said, "No, that was the style. Here we are feeding an elephant which seems only lightly barricaded, and there's one of those free-range deer trying to steal the pachyderm's treat. Here's my Uncle Tommy, flashing a nervous smile as a antlered herd gets a whiff of his crackers. Kind of reminds me of the herds of children at Carson City back in the day.
Dont know why my parents never stop with me and sister went pass it many times going to the game farm wish we did, carson gamefarm.
My ex-husband was a cowboy there for about 4 years. I saw many a show there and to include the jumping horse. That was actually poked in the behind so it would jump LOL. Was there a bench with a statue of a cowboy on that bench there? We used to visit all types of amusement parks and I've got an old picture of me when I was a small boy.

Not really selling the place very well. Update: I tracked down a little more info, but not much. This article says Carson City was owned by Arthur Gillette, who sold it in This is a place that most kids-especially boys-will absolutely adore.

If I can find that bench with the cowboy I'm going to sit right next to him with my 6'5 frame and grab another picture.

I can remember all the gunfights, the indian shows, and saloon shows step for step, note for note from seeing three shows a day for years on end, and we never got tired of them. I liked your gunfighting style, but your juggling was amazing!! I was a can can dancer along with Jennifer and Ann Marie. Pin Part 1 Part 2. Jul 7. I am lucky that I got to bring my daughter there when she was 3 in We loved it! Was there a bench with a statue of a cowboy on that bench there? Remember leaving the strollers outside the deer area, so you could go in and buy the crackers to feed them! Maybe if these places would market themselves a little better to the 21st century family, they can compete with other vacation destinations.
Circle L is one of the pioneer gamefarms in the country. The farm is strategically located in the hilly mountains of Mambucal, Murcia, Negros Occ. Circle L Gamefarm is home to a solid pool of well-established families of gamefowls consisting of Hatch, Greys, and Kelso.
I would go with them all the time to pleasant acres. First time I went to Carson City was in when my daughter was 7. Best days of my life, would give anything to go there again with my mom and dad. Loved hearing you did the same! I think the indian family had small children also. Brings back SO many memeories…. We spent our days visiting all the family attractions in the surrounding area, such as Catskill Game Farm. Well, while driving up a couple of years ago with daughter, I saw that the huge dairy farm that I remembered as a kid was still there on the other side of the road from the motel, amazing! Tons of memories of my young days and that of my daughter who is 39 now. Nothing that we didn't think was absolutely first class ever stayed on a walk or breeding farm, and consequently, hundreds got the ax, both males and females. I am from the Gillette side of the family. Like a cowboy with his leg crossed over the other sitting on the bench with one arm resting on the top of the bench so it looked like his arm was over your shoulder as u sat next to him??? My dad and brother were also in the shoot out in town and my mom was in the show at the saloon with Slim. Back then cowboy movies were the thing to watch and role play with the good guy winning.
