Now that I no longer travel as much as I used to, one of my pleasures in life is going to a restaurant I've never been to before that caters to the local community, and very much like if I were doing this abroad, trying to work out what to order in a language everyone else knows, pointing at the menu and hoping for the best. Xi'an as you may not know, was the start of the northern route of the Silk Road in China and the first city in China to be introduced to Islam.

Shaanxi cuisine, also called Qin cuisine, is one of the oldest cooking styles in China, dating back to the Yangshao culture period about 5, years ago. It includes a variety of food from the Guanzhong Plain, southern Shaanxi and the Shanbei area of the province. Shaanxi cuisine has incorporated and blended culinary traditions, talented people and cooking techniques from around the world due to the province's key role as a cradle of the culture and history throughout the Zhou c. The food culture here started from the Zhou and Qin dynasties and flourished in the Tang Dynasty.
