As well as figuring out its plans for the event, the CGF is also looking to find a host for the Games, with Canadian province Alberta withdrawing its bid due to rising costs. No Australian city has emerged as a potential replacement for Victoria, while previous host Birmingham stepped in itself after Durban, South Africa pulled out. A multi-city event would be the latest cost-saving measure the CGF has implemented to make the games more sustainable. In , it reduced the number of compulsory sports to just two in athletics and swimming, allowing hosts greater flexibility in choosing a programme that best suits their budget and audience.
