There is a lot of incredible art in the world that celebrates how amazing and magical life is. But there are also a lot of dark and depressing artworks with just as big of an audience. These creepy scary drawings and paintings are what we want to focus on. Art can be terrifying. It can be creepy. It can scare the hell out of you. This is why it is such a subjective form of expression. What you think is horrifying might be appealing to somebody else. Art that taps into your subconscious reveals a lot about who you are.

The best horror artists and gothic artists create extraordinary work all year round, not just for Halloween. But for anyone looking for creepy inspiration, they're a great place to start. For some artists, the macabre provides a release from internalised fear. For others, it's a playful way to seek a reaction from their viewers. Whatever the motive, managing to capture a truly frightening scene, and present the viewer with a disturbing yet beautiful image, is a real skill. A seven time recipient of the British Fantasy Award for Best Artist, Les Edwards is a classic horror artist who has been working as a professional illustrator for fifty years. He's worked in many areas, but he's probably best known for is many book covers in the horror, fantasy and science fiction genres. Based in Brighten, he has also branched into painting with a more romantic style under the pseudonym of Edward Miller.

When it comes to horror, we often refer to a genre of literature or film, but not so often to paintings. However, a big part of art history is actually built on morbid art and rather disturbing and scary paintings, many of which belong to the period of 'rebirth. While plenty of drawings and paintings from medieval times could be deemed frightening or disturbing, the most well-known examples of scary artworks depicting ominous, macabre themes were made during the Renaissance.
