The plot serves as a prequel to the manga and focuses on the power struggle between gang of students at Suzuran All-Boys High School. Crows Zero was released in Japan on 27 October and became a commercial success. It has spawned two sequels titled Crows Zero 2 and Crows Explode as well as a manga adaptation released 13 November Genji Takiya is a newly transferred high school senior who arrives at Suzuran All-Boys High School, which is infamous for its population of violent delinquents. During the freshman orientation assembly, the yakuza arrive at the school seeking vengeance on third-year Serizawa Tamao for assaulting some members of their gang. The thugs mistake Genji for their target and a brawl ensues on the school field. Meanwhile, Serizawa is visiting his best friend Tatsukawa Tokio, who has just been discharged from a hospital. Upon returning to the school, Serizawa witnesses Genji defeat the last of the yakuza. Genji goes to see his father Takiya Hideo, who is the yakuza boss. Genji proclaims his ambition to conquer Suzuran, a feat which Hideo himself had unsuccessfully attempted in his youth. Genji makes Hideo promise to acknowledge him as his successor should he succeed. The next day, Genji challenges Serizawa to a fight, but is halted by Tokio.

Crows Zero is not Miike's best film, though it will probably become one of his more popular ones. Anticipating the brewing conflict, Serizawa also begins recruiting factions for his own cause. Crows zero to explore, crows zero.

Genji's situation escalates when he unwittingly breaks a non-aggression pact between Suzuran and a rival school, Housen Academy, by coming to the aid of Kawanishi Noboru during a heated confrontation. Suzuran had subsequently sworn not to interfere with Housen's retribution upon Noboru's release from prison. Now that the pact is broken because of Genji's stubbornness, his alliance, mainly Serizawa, ask him to be prepared for the upcoming tension that will be created between the two schools. Genji's protection of Kawanishi provokes Housen's current leader Narumi Taiga to declare war against Suzuran.

The action scenes in particular look stunning, with perfect use of fast forward and slow motion to increase the impact of the punches. While the exterior of the film is a little slicker than usual there is still enough Miike weirdness left and some really bone crunching fights to behold. But it is still Miike alright.
