Some of you might recall one of my previous columns when I described my struggles getting an SDS accommodation. It has since only gone downhill from there. In this column, I will be bringing my experience as an example of how staff and faculty at Cornell can mistreat and mislead students trying to get SDS accommodations. As a person with Student Disability Services accommodations, I was entitled to ask my instructors for deadline extensions along with many other accommodations. In fact, I had two letters back to back, one for mental health reasons and one for my physical health after I was hospitalized.

Discrete Structures is a weird name - it would make more sense being named Discrete Mathematics. Usually there are weekly problem sets, prelims, and a final. Historically, homework is a relatively large portion of the grade. There is no programming in the course and the work load is reasonably consistent throughout the semester. Not significantly heavy, but can take up to a few hours a week pending how well you understand the topics. Taking this concurrently with CS is very manageable and helpful. There is a lot of overlap in topics especially relating to proofs by induction and graph theory although the overlap has lessened recently, especially as has come to focus less on proofs and it is helpful to see the information twice. This class is a foundation for a lot CS, so it is good to take reasonably early. Learning graph theory and proofs is reasonably important for lots of upper level courses and general CS. A lot of topics that were briefly covered in class were covered in depth in the textbook. Reading the textbook and looking over the examples boosted my scores on the test. Also, I did not have to go to office hours which were usually very crowded. Also, as mentioned before, graph theory, proofs, and most of the other material you learn is very useful for reasoning about various problems. With Bart Selman, I thought this class was really easy.

Workload was manageable but you pretty much needed office hours which were held really late at night pre-COVID to do well.

Course information provided by the Courses of Study Covers the mathematics that underlies most of computer science. Topics include mathematical induction; logical proof; propositional and predicate calculus; combinatorics and discrete mathematics; some basic elements of basic probability theory; basic number theory; sets, functions, and relations; graphs; and finite-state machines. These topics are discussed in the context of applications to many areas of computer science, such as the RSA cryptosystem and web searching. When Offered Fall, Spring.

Telephone Support: Biweekly problem sets were released between Monday and Wednesday and due the Friday of the following week, and you could work on them with a partner. On a more serious note, as someone who had mental health accommodations because of the war back home in Armenia, I find it concerning that the instructors can attack and blame a student like me without even knowing the reason for accommodations. In my case, the University failed me because I was physically sick and mentally vulnerable because of the war back home: circumstances that did not depend on me. Support the Sun! That is exactly what happened to me, and apparently they did not agree with the SDS letter, as they told my advisor that I had ample opportunity to catch up.
