When and why did you start training for fighting? A friend introduced me to it. At first, it was just something to do over the summer. I quickly realized that this is what I wanted to do. What does it mean for you to fight in the UFC? It's recognition for what I've done, but this is just the beginning; I want the belt.

Curtis Lionell Blaydes [7] [8] born February 18, [9] is an American professional mixed martial artist. As of July 25, , he is 5 in the UFC heavyweight rankings. Blaydes was born in Naperville, Illinois , and raised in nearby Chicago along with his four other siblings. He began wrestling for the De La Salle Institute , winning a state title his senior year while also compiling an undefeated 44—0 record. During his four years, Blaydes compiled an overall record of 95—18 with takedowns. Blaydes also played American football for De La Salle as a defensive end. He later earned a full wrestling scholarship to Northern Illinois University.

As the fifth contender and coming off a loss, Blaydes defended his spot against seventh ranked Almeida, who was undefeated in the UFC. He started strong, but ultimately Blaydes handed the Brazilian grappling phenom his first loss in the promotion and dashed his dreams of fighting for the title next. Jailton shot a takedown in the first fifteen seconds but Blaydes got his underhook and got the fence behind him. Almeida kept after it though, and got Blaydes down. He almost took the back, but Blaydes foiled it. However, Almeida lifted and slammed him down again.

In the featured prelim of UFC , we saw a massive fight in the heavyweight division. However, his last fight against Derrick Lewis failed to impress. Curtis Blaydes was originally supposed to face Almeida last year but an injury forced him out of the matchup. Now healthy, Blaydes was looking to get back on track after getting stopped by Sergei Pavlovich in his last fight. A win over Almeida would be huge for the top contender. The UFC featured prelim kicks off with a touch of the gloves. Almeida holds the center and Blaydes is light on his feet.
