During the first hour or so of dinner this week at Daldongnae Korean BBQ, we kept a growing tally of gripes. The wait for the meat that we would cook on our tabletop grill was a little long, and we wound up eating accoutrements and side dishes that should have accompanied our beef and pork. It definitely needed its dipping sauce to be appealing. Lettuce that was meant for making meaty wraps was too soggy and a little gritty.

It has been a while since I have had Korean barbecue and I was excited to try this restaurant out. We went to their first location in uptown Koreantown their second restaurant location is just up the street and also on Yonge Street. We found out that they open at noon, so we arrived promptly to be one of the first customers to get a table with the hope of not having to wait for a table. We initially had some trouble finding their onsite parking I mistakenly thought it was acceptable to park in the few spots next to the store but that is not theirs , so upon consulting the staff, we found out their designated customer parking spots are located just behind the restaurant you have to watch out for a little black sign that has the name of the restaurant on it. After we parked our vehicles successfully and entered the restaurant, I was pleased to see that we got a table easily. The restaurant was a bit dim in some areas especially where we were sitting , but the atmosphere was like we were at an authentic Korean restaurant. Perhaps customers tend to fill the place for the dinner service instead. Their menu is straight forward with a selection of various pork and beef cuts for the grill, several hot items, and drinks. As is common with most Korean barbecue restaurants, the grill items usually require a minimum order of two. Thus, we ordered two sets of pork belly and two sets of beef ribeye roll. We also got an order of their Seafood Pancake. The service here was phenomenal. Both servers who attended to us were very friendly and attentive they came around to assist us even with the slightest eye contact. The perimeter of the grill on the table was fitted with sections for liquid egg, kimchi, corn, and garlic.

Decor here is a throwback to the heyday of those neighbourhoods, with tightly packed stalls and paraphernalia like old timey war photos and vintage cigarette packs. Though the space is narrow, it feels more cozy than cramped, and there are enough booths and round tables in the restaurant to accommodate 66 people. Aside from a grill, the pan you're provided with also holds kimchi, raw beaten eggs, corn, and garlic in special side compartments. As you grill your meat, these items will heat up and cook themselves, making for great finger food and tasty condiments. For appetizers, the menu includes classic complimentary banchan like spiced cucumber and seaweed that are refillable. The bowl of soy sauce provided is a mix of sugar, lemon, jalapeno, and vinegar boiled together to create a unique flavour. It has a little kick but is mostly sweet; mixed with red apple, egg, cabbage and peppers, the noodles have a nice chewy texture.
