Dante is one of the main protagonists of the Devil May Cry franchise, and the main playable character for the majority of the games in the series. He is the second son of the demon Sparda and the human Eva , the younger twin brother of Vergil , and the uncle of Nero. Dante is a paranormal mercenary, private investigator and vigilante Devil Hunter dedicated to exterminating evil demons and other malevolent supernatural forces; a mission he follows in pursuit of those that killed his mother and corrupted his brother. As stated in an interview with original series creator Hideki Kamiya in the Devil May Cry Graphic Edition artbook, the earliest ideas he had for Dante's design were centered around three key points; " [a] long, stylish coat " to make the character "showy", " [a] British man " as Kamiya wanted him to be a "witty, yet traditional fighting man", and " doesn't smoke cigarette[s] ", believing that the character was too cool to smoke. In the same interview, another noted influence on Dante both design-wise and character-wise was Cobra of the acclaimed Japanese manga and anime series Space Adventure Cobra.

Based on the Dante's Inferno video game that is itself loosely based on Dante's Inferno , [1] [2] Dante must travel through the circles of Hell and battle demons, creatures, monsters, and even Lucifer himself to save his beloved Beatrice. The film was released on February 9, Returning from the Third Crusade — , Dante arrives home to find his servants slain, his father dead and his beloved fiancee Beatrice dying of a stab wound to the stomach. As she dies, Lucifer plucks Beatrice into the gates of Hell and Dante gives chase. Virgil appears and offers to guide him through Hell. They board Charon , a demonic, living ferry that takes souls to the First Circle of Hell. Charon commands demons to attack Dante, as no living being is allowed to enter. Dante fights them off, kills Charon, and steers him into the first circle, Limbo. In Limbo, Dante learns Beatrice was pregnant with his child while he was away, but miscarried. Attacked by demonic children, he and Virgil escape into a large building; they enter a hall of great rulers, philosophers, and thinkers. Moving on, they battle King Minos , whose task is to send condemned souls to their sin's corresponding circle of Hell. In the second circle, Lust, Dante is reminded that he was once unfaithful to Beatrice. Upon hearing this, Beatrice begins to lose faith. The pair come to a grotto where men and women who had lived their lives in gluttony are devoured by Cerberus , the great hound of Hell.

In its final form, I wanted it to transform into something that would be even bigger than Dante himself.
