Dave first approached drummer Carter Beauford, an accomplished musician who had played in a jazz-fusion band called Secrets, along with John D'earth and future DMB keyboardist Butch Taylor. Next, Dave approached saxophonist LeRoi Moore, a frequent performer at Miller's and other venues around Charlottesville. Based on the recommendation of John D'earth, year-old musical prodigy Stefan Lessard was invited to play bass. In the spring of , the Dave Matthews Band recorded their first demo. Feeling that there was something missing from the future fan-favorite "Tripping Billies," violinist Boyd Tinsley of the Boyd Tinsley Band was brought in to guest on the track.
