There were many great characters in Death Note. After defeating L and thinking the rest of his mission to become God would be easy, Light was not expecting Near to join the game. Near was one of the characters introduced in the second half of the series and was the one to avenge his idol, L. Due to his lack of taking action and having a lot of similarities to his predecessor, Near is a very controversial character. Some fans love him while others consider him to be the worst character in the story. Though Mello ended up playing a big part in defeating Kira, Near was the one that would avenge their predecessor. After the editor accidentally switched things up, the creators went with it. It is very strange for fans to think of Near doing everything that Mello did and Mello staying calm while getting information solely by speaking to people.
