Death of a Salesman is a American drama film adapted from the play of the same name by Arthur Miller. Alex North , who wrote the music for the Broadway production, was one of the five Academy Award nominees for the film's musical score. Traveling salesman Willy Loman has led a life consisting of 60 years of failure. Loman's wife supports him, but he soon begins to lose his grip on reality and slips between the past and the present, frantically trying to find where he went wrong. An insurance policy is paid out to the rest of the Loman family, as Willy felt he was worth more dead than alive. Just before the film was about to be released, Arthur Miller threatened to sue Columbia Studios over the short that was to appear before Death of a Salesman. Miller saw Career of a Salesman as an attack upon his work, proclaiming: "Why the hell did you make the picture if you're so ashamed of it? Why should anybody not get up and walk out of the theater if Death of a Salesman is so outmoded and pointless? Benedek took great care in making the film a close transcription of the play. The cast consisted principally of the Broadway cast, with the addition of Kevin McCarthy from the original London cast.

The film follows the script of the play, with only minor differences, and premiered on CBS September 15, The film earned 10 Emmy nominations at the 38th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, and four Golden Globe nominations at the 43rd Golden Globe Awards ceremony, winning three and one, respectively. Willy Loman returns home exhausted after a canceled business trip. Worried over Willy's state of mind and recent car crash, his wife Linda suggests that he asks his boss Howard Wagner to allow him to work in his home city so he will not have to travel anymore. Willy complains to Linda that their son Biff, who is visiting, has yet to be successful in life. Despite Biff's promise as an athlete in high school, he flunked senior year math and never went to college. Willy is prone to frequent flashbacks in which he sees events and figures from his past, such as his long-deceased older brother Ben, Willy's idol. Unable to distinguish between his memories and present-day reality, he speaks to the people in his flashbacks as if they were real, startling those around him. Biff and his brother Happy, who is also visiting, discuss their father's mental degradation while reminiscing about their childhood together.

Because of its complex nature, its many morals, its non-linear flashbacks, and its over-the-top characters, I express extreme doubts when believing that Arthur Miller's renowned Death of a Salesman was meant to be read.
