Slade was initially an ally of Oliver on the island , where he taught the shipwrecked playboy the majority of his combat skills which he would later utilize in his crusade as the Arrow and Green Arrow. Slade was later injected with an experimental Mirakuru serum after a near-fatal accident and embarked on a crusade of vengeance against Anthony Ivo for killing Shado. Slade swore vengeance against Oliver as well upon learning that he apparently chose to save Sara Lance over Shado, a woman he claimed to have loved. During a climactic battle aboard the Amazo , Oliver seemingly killed Slade after stabbing an arrow into his right eye. Slade Wilson is a former member of Team 7, an elite division of the Australian Secret Intelligence Service, who was plane-wrecked on Lian Yu, where he became a mentor and good friend of Oliver Queen , and the lover of Shado. But Slade would later become Oliver's arch nemesis, the mercenary named " Deathstroke ". Slade and his partner, Billy Wintergreen , were sent on a mission to rescue Yao Fei from a detention facility on Lian Yu. Both were captured by mercenaries led by Edward Fyers. Wintergreen betrayed Slade and joined Fyers, while Slade escaped and was forced to to go into hiding and adopt a different strategy for extracting Yao Fei. Oliver Queen eventually acquired a map which lead him to a downed cargo plane that Slade has been using as a hideout. When Oliver discovered the Deathstroke mask in Slade's possession, Slade revealed his connection to Oliver's torturer , and trained Oliver so he could help him carry out his mission. They ultimately planned to ambush an airfield and use a cargo plane to escape. Slade eventually dueled Wintergreen, gaining revenge on him by stabbing him in the eye with his combat knife. He is subsequently shot by Fyers, but Oliver managed to remove the bullet and heal him with "super herbs" that Yao Fei had previously used on him. Oliver and Slade needed a new strategy to escape, but Slade believed that with Oliver's newfound experience, they now had a chance. However, a few months later, a second group of mercenaries, led by Anthony Ivo , arrived on the island, with the intent on salvaging World War II wreckage detailing Unit 's research into a Venom -like substance called Mirakuru. Arrow and, in turn, the "Arrowverse", has no shortage of supervillains living within it. All worthy foes, but in the case of Oliver Queen's journey in the Arrowverse, there's only one villain worthy of the title of the Green Arrow vigilante's arch nemesis. A ruthless killer who has consistently cemented himself as being up there with The Joker and Lex Luthor as one of the DC Universe's most dangerous foes, being capable of going toe-to-toe with just about any hero on the Justice League and beyond. While this character hasn't had his time to shine yet in live-action feature films apart from an all-too-brief interpretation from Joe Manganiello in the defunct Snyderverse , this deadly assassin has quickly made an unforgettable presence in the world of television. When presumed-dead billionaire playboy Oliver Queen returns home to Starling City after five years stranded on a remote island in the Pacific, he hides the changes the experience had on him, while secretly seeking reconciliation with his ex, Laurel. By day he picks up where he left off, playing the carefree philanderer he used to be, but at night he dons the alter ego of Arrow and works to right the wrongs of his family and restore the city to its former glory.
For what reason did the producers and writers decide to introduce Deathstroke Manu Bennett in Arrow season 1? The first season of the series that started the CW's Arrowverse unsurprisingly used numerous characters associated with Green Arrow in the comics, but the inclusion of Deathstroke — the Teen Titans' biggest villain — was a bit unexpected. Deathstroke became a recurring character throughout Arrow ; however, he was never a part of the show's original plan. The two were forced to work together for a while, with Deathstroke taking it upon himself to teach Oliver how to fight. The two formed a bond that was broken by Shado's death and Wilson being infected with Mirakuru. In season 2, Slade Wilson moved up from a flashback character to the season's main antagonist. Following his defeat, he was imprisoned in Lian Yu, but was eventually released once Oliver decided that he could be trusted again. Deathstroke would tend to disappear for lengths at a time , but he did have guest appearances in seasons 3, 5, and 6.

When it was announced that Crisis on Infinite Earths would be adapted for the Arrowverse crossover, it was presumed that big changes were on the way. Those changes began even before the event started, with Arrow season 8 returning to the world of Star City first introduced during season 7's flash-forwards. Early on in the season, the children of Star City's heroes were sent 20 years into their past, inadvertently changing the future with their actions. With Crisis on Infinite Earths having drastically changed the present day Arrowverse , it was even more uncertain just how much things might have changed in the future.
