In the ancient past, on an unknown world, weary travelers destiny lore in the desert to discover a great machine. They called it The Gardener.

Lore are collectibles, originally a category of Triumphs , that were added to Destiny 2 with the release of Forsaken. It is divided into four sections: The Vanguard added in Lightfall , The Light, Dusk and Dawn, and The Darkness, each of which contains several lore books with multiple entries. With some exceptions, each category is focused on certain subjects. Lore entries are unlocked via finding collectibles throughout the game or completing certain tasks. As of Beyond Light's release, all entries from lore books that were added throughout Forsaken and Shadowkeep's yearly cycles have been automatically unlocked.

But in time, they craved meaning from their machine god, and discovered another entity among the stars, The Veil. Through the Veil, they found the means to become the winnowers they longed for. By joining the Traveler and Veil, a portal could be created to a realm where they could re-shape reality. But the Traveler fled from this. To chase after their machine god, they used the power of Darkness they'd learned from the Veil to join their minds together.
