The Doctor realises that the gravitational pull of another planet entering the solar system is causing the problem. Soon after the planet appears a group of Cybermen land near the base. The Cybermen explain that their home planet Mondas is draining energy from Earth and that they want to take the humans back to Mondas for conversion into further members of their race. Eventually Mondas disintegrates from absorbing too much energy, doctor who and the cybermen.

The Cybermen are a fictional race of cyborgs principally portrayed in the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who. The Cybermen are a species of space-faring cyborgs who often forcefully and painfully convert human beings or other similar species into more Cybermen in order to populate their ranks while also removing their emotions and personalities. They were conceived by writer Kit Pedler who was also the unofficial scientific advisor to the series and story editor Gerry Davis , and first appeared in the Doctor Who serial The Tenth Planet. The Cybermen have seen many redesigns and costume changes over Doctor Who ' s long run, as well as a number of varying origin stories. In their first appearance, The Tenth Planet , they are humans from Earth's nearly identical "twin planet" of Mondas who upgraded themselves into cyborgs in a bid for self-preservation. Forty years later, the two-part story, " Rise of the Cybermen " and " The Age of Steel " , depicted Cybermen invented again in a parallel universe London as a business corporation's attempt at upgrading humanity.

Once human, the Cybermen upgraded themselves, replacing human flesh with cybernetics and removing all emotions to become uniform, unfeeling, calculating cyborgs, set upon converting all humanity into Cybermen. However, just one year later in , "The Tomb of the Cybermen" would claim the icy world of Telos was in fact their home. While 's "Attack of the Cybermen" claimed the Telosian Cybermen were in fact colonizers from Mondas, other accounts suggested the Cybermen started on Telos and then colonized Mondas, or even developed independently on the two worlds. The modern series and Doctor Who 's Expanded Universe have added even more origins of the Cybermen, throwing their history into question.

In "Doomsday", a Cyberman which contains the brain of Torchwood Institute director Yvonne Hartman retains a female-sounding though still electronic voice, as does the partially converted Lisa Hallett in "Cyberwoman" when her Cyberman personality is dominant. With enough components to reawaken them, after being presumed extinct for a thousand years, an army of three million Cybermen awoke from their tombs.
