Victor Fries was a talented scientist, with a horrible past a violent father, no friends that married the love of his life, Nora Fries. When Nora is diagnosed with a rare terminal illness, Victor's life begins to spiral downhill. In a desperate attempt to save her life, he begins work at a large corporate company run by the evil and corrupted Ferris Boyle. Fries, as he cannot find a way to cure Nora, finds a way to place her in cryo-stasis. In order to save Nora he has to steal equipment from the company he is working for. When Ferris finds out about Fries stealing from him, he and some of his goons try to kill Fries in the cryo lab.

To counteract this, Victor constructed a special, ultra-durable suit to keep his body alive and at the right temperature. He embraced his new persona and became Mr. Freeze is on a constant quest to bring back his beloved Nora, and he'll do whatever it takes to succeed. He wields a freeze gun and uses ice and cold to wreak havoc—mostly in Gotham and against Batman, but he'll turn his chill upon anyone standing in his way.

Eventually, Batman himself was forced to focus his efforts on one side to minimize casualties and was forced to ally himself with the Riddler.

Victor's father didn't understand the choice, but Victor said he liked it because it was easy to remember. During a cold winter, his father abandoned him and his mother; Victor watched from the window as the man refused to wish him goodbye.

His research in cryogenics was eventually cut off by the bureaucrats at Gothcorp. His experiment to create a cryogenic freezing chamber to house his wife until a cure could be found was interrupted by Ferris Boyle, C. A fight ensued, accompanied by an explosion.
