At this point in the creative process, Toriyama had not yet settled upon a name. Handwritten notes on the illustration translate to "Saiyan Limit" and "Saiyan Z," both of which are alternate names for Vegeta's iconic form. Super Vegeta made his first appearance in the "Perfect Cell Saga. During Vegeta's bout with Semi-Perfect Cell, the Saiyan transcends beyond Super Saiyan to an even more powerful state, causing even the normally overconfident Cell to tremble in fear. Despite previous difficulties, Vegeta manages to knock Cell around easily in his new form. Pleased with his new strength, Vegeta triumphantly refers to himself as "Super Vegeta. The Dragon Ball series has gone to crazy lengths recently with multiple universes, god like transformations, and insanely animated fight sequences so it might leave you wishing for the more humble tone of early Dragon Ball. This recently uncovered piece of concept art for Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga will not only make you nostalgic for its humble origins, but tug at your heartstrings for a number of reasons. The concept art features early designs for both Goku and Bulma , and it's interesting to see how much of these original designs make it to the final work. Both characters highly resemble their final incarnations, but have enough slight differences that fans are sure to notice. Early concept artwork for Bulma and Goku. Goku's outfit is far removed from his usual training Gi as he dons a young, almost boy scout like outfit complete with ascot and fancier shoes than fans would ever think Goku would wear. His early personality as a child was rambunctious, and often naked, so to see him in fancier duds would sure does seem odd. Bulma seems a bit younger than in her final incarnation, but her look could have easily translated into the pages of Toriyama's final work. Her cowboy shoes match her realistic looking revolver, which may or not have been easily translated into Bulma 's final characterization.

The evil kai ended up in league with the villain group The Core Area Warriors, as part of a plan by the group's leader, Hearts, to cultivate a god-killing weapon called The Universe Seed, using the energies of warriors from across the universe.

It was very, very lazy, even for someone like him who is recently always re-using the same poses for his designs. The way he draws them now, with their heads jutting forwards, is actually a medical condition that many bodybuilders face. I always find it interesting how Toriyama drew them standing with good posture but somewhere in the Cell arc, began drawing their heads hunched forwards.
