He is the son of Valka and the late Hooligan chief, Stoick the Vast , thus making him the heir, and later, the chief of the tribe. His dragon and best friend, Toothless , is a Night Fury. By the end of the franchise, he marries Astrid Hofferson and they eventually have a daughter, Zephyr , and a son, Nuffink. He is also the distant ancestor of Tom Kullersen , through his mother Olivia. In the first film , Hiccup's appearance is very similar to his book counterpart. He initially has little physical strength, as he has difficulty lifting a large standard battle axe handed to him by his father.

He and the dragon started fighting with each other, the results leading to Valka being abducted by the dragon, and her husband heartbroken. This led Stoick to become overly protective of his son, though as Hiccup grew, the two became distant.
