He was scared of the ocean and had no prior knowledge of dugongs, but that didn't stop Nickolas Temarlau from creating Daisy the Dugong, the first 3D animation conceived, created and published in Vanuatu. During the pandemic, the young Temarlau, inspired by his favourite TV show, took it upon himself to learn how exactly computer animation worked. Using the one, incredibly slow laptop available to him at the time, he looked up YouTube tutorials on how to animate whilst at home in Port Vila. Modelling Daisy and how dugongs swim was also a tricky part of the project, given Temarlau is afraid of the ocean and had never seen a dugong before. To be honest, I have no prior knowledge of dugongs. I don't know their colour, what they look like, what they eat. The animation was published on World Ocean Day and is a collaboration between the Vanuatu Environmental Science Society VESS to raise conservation awareness, particularly about how people should behave in dugong waters.
