Robert Poss is best known for his work with Band of Susans, a late s-early s guitar-centric no wave band that came up in the same general scene and time frame as Sonic Youth and Swans. Band of Susans went through a number of configurations, but it never had fewer than three guitarists at a time. Now a few decades and a handful of solo albums on, Poss is still fascinated by the possibilities of amplification and feedback, though perhaps in a more lyrical, less confrontational way than in his youth. Floyd wanted his own punk band so badly that he invented Dicks, a fake outfit he promoted with flyers for phony shows at non-existent addresses. This prankish behavior would continue even after Floyd put together a real band — Daniel tried to go to one of these fake shows when he first moved to Austin — but a flesh and blood scene was thriving, and included bands like MDC and Big Boys. These songs sidle in slyly, cleverly worded but not obnoxious about it, beautifully played but not in any showy way. The music, befitting the subject matter, is at turns somber and hopeful, developing slowly and deliberately and captivating from start to finish.
