Dwarf Fortress is a single-player fantasy game. You can control a dwarven outpost or an adventurer in a randomly generated, persistent world. When Dwarf Fortress mode is selected, the player is given the option to choose the embark location in the world. The lack of graphics, poor interface and controls were seen as the reasons for the game's difficulty. Later on, we'll likely add some squad orders to make ranged dwarves do similar things in combat situations, but we aren't to that part yet. As a bonus, in the Premium version you can flip between graphics and Classic with a simple settings option during play without having to reload.
